About Mildred Arline Young Pneuman

    Born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Mildred Pneuman was a painter in watercolor and oil of landscapes, seascapes and still lifes, and also did wood block printing, lithographs, etchings and serigraphs. She began focusing on western themes in the mid-1920s and sketched in New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, California, Mexico and Canada. According to her son, Fred Pneuman, her favorite subjects were mountains, primarily in Colorado and New Mexico. She painted Southwest Indian subjects as well as early missionary scenes. Most of her block prints were done in the late 1930's and 1940's. Among the titles of her paintings were Pikes Peak, Long's Peak, Camelback and Papago, Phoenix, Late Afternoon, Tucson, and Taos, New Mexico.
