    Tingle, Miriam “Minnie” May Orewyler (Mrs. Thomas Radcliffe Tingle) (1874-1926)

    Lived in Los Angeles

    American Poet and Artist. She was a well-recognized painter as well as being an accomplished poet and pianist. Born Miriam May, she was one of eleven children of Hezekiah Orewiler and Mary Ellen Forman. She studied at Hardin College and Conservatory of Music located in Mexico, Missouri. She married an editor, Thomas Tingle, in 1900. After the couple relocated to California, she started painting landscapes including mountains and ocean scenes.

    During the last few years of her life, she painted a set of all the California missions which she donated to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art [Sic. History, Science and Art] after her solo exhibition there in 1925. Her main exhibits were California Art Club in 1923; Laguna Beach Art Association in 1924; Los Angeles Athletic Club in 1925; and West Coast Arts in 1925.

    Her painting Bathers Laguna Beach sold on February 19, 2008 for $6,780. Her poem El Camino Real tells of her adventure painting the California missions. Her out-of-print book, California Missions and Mission Sites along the King's Highway in 1924, has reproductions of her mission paintings accompanying her verses and today is a collector’s item.     Born in Shelby County, MO on May 28, 1874. Tingle studied at Hardin College. A talented lady, she was an accomplished pianist and poet as well as a fine painter. During the last few years of her life, she painted a set of all the California missions which she donated to LACMA after their exhibition there in 1925. She died in Los Angeles on Feb. 20, 1926. Exh: Calif. Art Club, 1923; Laguna Beach AA, 1924; Athletic Club (LA), 1925; West Coast Arts, 1925; LACMA, 1925 (solo).

    A painter of all the California missions, which she donated to the Los Angeles County Museum, Minnie Tingle was born in Missouri and studied at Hardin College. As a young woman, she showed remarkable talent in music and poetry as well as fine art.

    She was a member of the California Art Club and the Laguna Beach Art Association.
