  • Biography

Nathan Altman was a Russian and Soviet painter, sculptor, and stage designer whose work was central to the development of the Russian avant-garde. A graduate of the Odessa Art School (1902–1907), he continued his studies in Paris at the Free Russian Academy of Maria Vassilieva (1910–1911), where he was influenced by Cubism and the broader currents of European modernism.

Altman’s early career was marked by active participation in progressive exhibitions and artist collectives. His work combined formal experimentation with portraiture, graphic design, and scenography, and he was named Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1968.
