    Nathaniel (Nathaneal, Nathaneel) Sichel was born in Mainz (Mentz, Mayence), Germany on January 8,1843 and died on April 12, 1907 in Berlin. He studied with the esteemed art teacher Julius Schrader at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich from 1859 - 1862. Sichel won the prestigious Italian prize and accompanying traveling scholarship in 1864, for a painting entitled Joseph Explains the Dreams of the Pharaoh, establishing him in his primacy as an Orientalist.

    Sichel then went to Paris, where he painted a portrait of the Countess of Ernaudes that was exhibited in the Salon of 1865, and which prefigures his later development in portraiture.
