    Nicholas Hornyansky
    1896 - 1965

    Nicholas Hornyansky was born in Budapest and worked as a colour mixer in his father's printing office while still a boy. He studied art at the city's Academy of Fine Arts and elsewhere in Europe and became an accomplished portrait painter, exhibiting in Antwerp and Brussels. He branched into etching and landscape painting and was associated with Belgian's School of Hens before travelling to England where he received several portrait commissions.

    He returned to Paris to study aquatint printmaking before emigrating to Canada in 1929. Hornyansky's figure painting attracted attention in Toronto and he exhibited regularly with the Royal Canadian Academy and the Ontario Society of Artists. He made...
