About Oswald Oberhuber

  • Biography from Ressler Kunst Auktionen

Oswald Obernhuber studied at the Academy of Arts in Vienna with Wotruba and at the National Academy in Stuttgart in Baumeister. Until about 1957 he engaged in informal painting and sculpture, then began his representational figure painting. Between 1958 and 1961 he gave his work a new change: Now leaned Oberhuber any style education, and it created pictures in vielfältigster technique and themes. In 1964 Oberhuber was a consultant, and then from 1973 he was artistic director of the Galerie St. Stephan. In 1972 Oberhuber represented Austria at the Venice Biennale. In 1973 he became a professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and remained so, in part, as its rector, 1998. Oswald Oberhuber loves to put laws and regulations except power to make a gene of artistic behind: As co-founder of the Austrian informal painting and sculpture (in 1949) he had already formulated in the mid-1950s his theory of incessant change in art. Oswald Oberhuber is one of the most versatile personalities of the Austrian cultural landscape of 1945.
