    After his early wish to become a priest and the military service in the Second World War, Oswald Tschirtner was diagnosed with schizophrenia and hallucinations after his return from war and was internalized to the Gugging asylum, in Klosterneuburg just outside Vienna, where the neurologist and psychiatrist Leo Navratil founded the ‘Haus der Künstler’ in 1981. Ever since then patients engage in artistic activities there. Oswald Tschirtner lived here until his death and left behind a comprehensive body of drawings in Indian ink pen, executed mainly in small formats.
