    Otto Eerelman, born in Groningen in 1839, is generally considered one of the best Dutch animal painters of the 19th century. He was trained at the Academy Minerva where he received drawing and painting lessons from the director and historical painter J.H. Egenberger (1822-1897), who also taught Hendrik Willem and his brother Taco Mesdag. After leaving the Academy, Eerelman moved to Antwerp where he was rewarded with the Prix d'excellence.

    In Antwerp Eerelman worked in the studio of the renowned Dutch painter Lawrence Alma Tadema (1836-1912), who taught him the principles of painting. He worked in Paris for a short time in 1867 and in Brussels from 1874. Eerelman returned to his native town Groningen and devot...
