About Paratene Matchitt

  • Biography

Paratene Matchitt is a true Maori modern artist. Integrating indigenous themes and motifs in works with a modernist stylistic execution, Matchitt recognises his Whakatohea, Te Whanau-a-Apanui, and Ngati Porou lineage. While influenced in his practice by Picasso and the cubist movement, he conveys a distinctly Maori view of the world. Matchitt’s works thematically embody a decolonisation of art practice in Aotearoa. Fittingly, the artist literally disrupted a Pakeka-dominated 20th century New Zealand art world as one of the first Maori artists to exhibit works in the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. Matchitt’s oeuvre offers an expert amalgamation of European modernist methodologies and indigenous concepts and designs.
