    Ralph Hotere Hayman was born in London in 1915 and spent his formative years in New Zealand. He attended Dunedin School of Art and was part of a group of young artists including Doris Lusk, Tosswill Woollaston, and Colin McCahon. Hayman became part of the St Ives artists' colony in Cornwall and was known for his text-based artwork. He taught at the Croydon School of Art in London during the 1960s and had solo exhibitions in Cornwall, London, and abroad. His daughter, Christina Conrad, is also an artist.
