Paul von Spaun was one of the few students of the painter Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, a visionary and free spirit who is best known for his unusual ideas of "life reform". As a disciple, Paul von Spaun belonged to the "Commune of the Himmelhof" founded by Diefenbach in Vienna-Hütteldorf. Together with his teacher, von Spaun moved to Capri around 1900 and married his daughter Stella. In 1910 Paul von Spaun and his wife finally bought a house on this legendary island, which became the main subject of his painting.
