About Paul Cuvelier

  • Biography

A genius spotted by Hergé at an early stage, the painter Paul Cuvelier constantly pursued anatomical accuracy and grace. But the illustrator also knew how to forget the painter: everything in the page is expressed in lines and outlines; the drawing uses very few solid areas. After two Oriental adventures, the story establishes a form of semi-realistic western, which goes on to inspire several to take up a career in comics, from Hermann to Derib.
