About Paul De Vos

  • Biography

Paul de Vos was among the leading animal and hunt still life painters in 17th century Flanders. He was born near Antwerp to a family of artists. His brothers Cornelis and Jan were also painters, and he was related by marriage to Frans Snyders, who was his tutor.

Like Snyders, de Vos cooperated with some of the leading painters active in Antwerp at this time, including Peter Paul Rubens and Antonis van Dyck, and it was in this fertile artistic climate that his depictions of animals fighting, hunting scenes and still lifes with game or fruit were created.
