    Paulassie Pootoogook (1927 – 2006)

    A prominent Inuit Canadian sculptor, draftsman, and printmaker, Paulassie Pootoogook (disc number* E7-1176) was born in Igalalik [aka: Andrew Gordon Bay), Nunavut; which is about 30 miles east of Kinngait [aka: Cape Dorset*] where he lived for most of his life and died. His carvings and prints were exhibited widely in Canada, the USA, and Europe and his works are in over a dozen major museums in Canada and the USA. (1)

    His primary mediums were stone carvings and stonecut* prints. His primary subjects were Inuit genre*, religious and cultural figures, Arctic wildlife (e.g. birds, bears, seals, and walrus), and mythological creatures. His styles could be described as Inuit Art* and Surrealism*...
