    Landscape painter and portraitist Pavel Antonovich Gromnicki (1889 - 1977), also known as Pavlo Hromnický, was born on 15.12.1889 in Ekaterinoslav (today's Dnepropetrovsk) in Ukraine.

    He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg with Valentin Serov and Ilya Repina. He relocated during World War I. to Prague, where he became a student and assistant Ferdinand Engelmüller.

    In the years 1922 to 1925 studied in Paris with Henry Matisse, who became his friend. He undertook his studies trips to Italy, India, Tibet, Japan, USA. However, he spent most of his life in Czechoslovakia, where he also died in 1977.
