About Peggy Spicer

  • Biography

Mary Margaret Gore Spicer, daughter of painter Ella Spicer, was born in Parnell, Auckland. She was educated at Chilton Saint James School and Diocesan School in New Zealand. Spicer studied at Elam School of Art under John Weeks and Ida Eise. Her early employment with architect Wilson Moodie provided her with a strong foundation in draughtsmanship, which is evident in her architectural subjects focusing on the changing face of Auckland. She traveled extensively with her mother, painting and exhibiting artworks. Peggy Spicer, as she was known artistically, was a regular exhibitor at the Auckland Society of Arts and the Rutland Group, winning a prize in the Kelliher Art Prize in 1963.
