He studied painting at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts before moving to New York City. He taught art at the Brooklyn Boys High School while he continued his own studies at the Pratt Institute*. There he met his future wife Mary Hallet, who attended Pratt to study painting, leather tooling and woodworking. The pair discovered that they has two loves in common; painting and their noted accomplishments as violinists. The pair returned to St. Louis in the early 1920s.
