He belonged to a family of painters: his brother was Johann Melchior Roos [Dec. 27, 1663 - 1731], his father Johann Heinrich Roos [Oct.27, 1631 - Oct. 3, 1685], his uncle Theodor Roos [Sept. 1638 - June 7, 1687], his son Cajetan Roos [1690-1770], and his grandson Joseph Roos [Oct. 9, 1726 - Aug. 25, 1805]. Phillip Peter Roos went to Italy in 1677, on a scholarship from the Landgrave of Hesse. In Rome he studied under Giacinto Brandi, whose daughter Maria Isabella he married in 1681, after converting to the Catholic faith.
