    Phillip Martin 1927-2014

    Born 1st June in England from Irish family from Cork.
    Attended Felsted Public school, for 10 years.
    Served three years in the navy 1946-48

    1948.
    Entered the Franciscan brotherhood as a lay brother. Left the order because of differences in philosophy and devoted himself to painting. Wandering about and lived with the poor in London. Painted for a time in the cellar of a municipal lodging-house.

    1949/50.
    Two sojourns in the Abbey-art center ( London ) where he commenced painting. He was greatly encouraged on the way by Scottish artist Alan Davie also resident at the Abbey Artist colony.
