About Pieter Gallis

  • Biography

Pieter Gallis was a Dutch still-life artist.

He was the manager of the municipal pawnshop at Hoorn and painted, as an amateur, flowers, fruit, festoons and hunting still-lifes with dead birds and hares. According to old tradition, he also painted landscapes.

His breakfast still-lifes on a dark background recall Jan van de Velde (1620-1662) by their economical composition, while his flowers and fruit show an affinity to Jan Albertsz. Rootius (1624-1666), the other still life painter of Hoorn.

Pieter Gallis is represented in the following collections: Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK, amongst others.
