    National comic strip illustrator who visited Cambria in 1949.

    Raeburn Van Buren (January 12, 1891 – December 29, 1987) “… has been visiting in Cambria with Quintan Wood, following a tour with a cartoonist troupe in the interests of a national bond sales drive. The troupe put on shows in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Houston, Texas. During his brief stay in Cambria, the noted artist stopped by the Cambrian office with Wood, renewing a lifetime acquaintance with newspapers which began when, at the age of 18, he was pen-and-ink sketch man for the Kansas City Star. The ‘Abbie and Slats’ strip was begun 12 ½ years ago, and its characters and locale are based upon actual people and a real town. ...
