    Rafael Coronel is one of Mexico's most recognized artists and a major figure in Mexican cultural life and, especially the life of his native state of Zacatecas. While he came of age in an era when the Mexican Muralists dominated the Mexican art scene and as abstraction was just becoming popular, he followed his own path, finding inspiration in sources as diverse as the work of the El Greco (1541-1614), the Baroque Era, as well as the works of Francisco Goya (1746-1828) and Francis Bacon (1909-1992).
