    Rafael Zabaleta was born in 1907 in Quesada, Jaén, into a wealthy family with Basque roots. He showed an early passion for painting and, in 1925, moved to Madrid to study at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where his instructors included Laínez Alcalá, Cecilio Pla, and Ignacio Pinazo.

    Zabaleta’s first group exhibition took place in 1932, and his painting La pareja was selected to illustrate a review by Manuel Abril in Blanco y Negro magazine. In 1935, he traveled to Paris, where he studied the works of contemporary masters, an experience that would deeply influence his evolving style.
