Ragnar Persson
  • Biography from Bukowski, Helsinki

Ragnar Person was a Swedish visual artist. Best known as a folk painter and loved by many through his folk motifs. Was actually a bricklayer, but as a "goose" painter he discovered the artist's freedom.

Got in touch with the Halmstad group and first started painting in a cubist spirit. After studying in Paris, he was influenced by Jean Baptiste Camille Corot's moist landscape painting, which gave him the courage to paint what he himself liked - the life of the people at home in Småland.

He developed a color romantic and expressionist painting. Many of the motifs for Ragnar Person's paintings are taken from Angelstad, the parish of Småland where the artist grew up. He had a nostalgic relationship with the place and the different environments and felt a sense of belonging to the area and the population. In Ragnar Person's motifs, the people are portrayed in an intimate and personal way. The artist who was a student of Esaias Thorén and Waldemar Lorentzon was influenced early on by the Halmstad group's expression, but Person developed over time into a Nordic expressionist and towards the end of his art, his paintings acquired impressionistic features.

Ragnar Person's characteristic way of expressing himself with diffuse details and brushstrokes, where his motifs appear in a white hazy light almost in a glow of silver. He seldom paints the details, the viewer himself can contribute and shape his own image based on individual experiences and memories. His motifs can be seen as vague memorial images from our Nordic folk life with motifs from festivals, farmers' auctions, working farmers and, as in the auction's catalog number, a twilight image from a farm with folk life and snow ears.
