    Ralph Crosby Smith 1907 - 1962, was born in Sacramento, CA to parents, Henry and Floy Smith who were from Iowa. Ralph graduated form Sacramento High School in 1925 and enrolled in University of California. He joined Delta Epsilon Art Honor Society and wrote for the student newspaper, The Daily Californian.

    After graduating in 1929, he moved to Wilmington, DE to study at the Wilmington Academy of Art. There he took classes under illustrator Gayle Porter Hoskins, a former student of Howard Pyle. In 1930 he married Viretta Hoskins.
