    Reginald Bathurst was born in London, England on May 2, 1856. Birch studied in Paris, Antwerp, Italy, and at the Munich Royal Academy. He came to the U.S. in 1872. By the next year he had moved to San Francisco where he was a portrait painter and a designer-engraver of theatrical posters.

    By 1881 he had moved to NYC to illustrate for St Nicholas magazine. He also illustrated Little Lord Fauntleroy, Sarah Crew, and Lady Jane.

    Birch died in NYC on June 17, 1943.
