As the son of large landowners, René Auberjonois grew up in prosperous circumstances, which allowed him to pursue his various artistic interests without financial worries. After a bank apprenticeship and a stay in England, where he took violin lessons and made his first drawings, he attended the Polytechnic in Dresden.

Finally he decided to study painting, returned to London and attended the Kensington School of Art.
