    Richard Theodor Birnstengel (born October 27, 1881 in Dresden, † April 8, 1968 ibid) was a German painter who worked in Saxony and in East Prussia.

    Richard Birnstengel was born in poor conditions. By profession, his mother was a midwife by profession who raised three sons by herself. Richard studied from 1901 to 1909 at the Dresden Academy of Arts under Oskar Zwintscher and Gotthardt Kuehl. There he also met Georg Gelbke, with whom he shared many similarities. His study trips took him to Bohemia, Paris, Corsica and Dalmatia.

    An art-minded estate manager at Dresden asked Birnstengel and Gelbke to teach his daughters drawing, with the result that both married one of the daughters. In a house near the main station in Dresden were...
