    Richard Burnside (b. November 28, 1944,Baltimore, Maryland)

    He began painting around 1980, while employed as a chef in a restaurant in Charlotte, NC. In 1983, he moved to Pendleton, South Carolina, where he now resides. His images include Ancient Kings and Queens, Jungle Cats, and a White Wolf. Many of his paintings include what he calls "Roman writing", letters in an ancient language the artist sees in his visions.

    Vivid enamels on board are often applied so thick that the images rise off the surface. He glues pine cone pieces sometimes for teeth and claws and also paints on gourds, paper and found objects.
    In 1988, Burnside's work was included in "Outside the Main Stream" at the High Museum...
