Born in Bandung in 1973, R.E. Hartanto is an Indonesian artist, currently living and working in Bandung, Indonesia. He is known for his provocative portraitures that narrate stories of contemporary social political issues that are prevalent in our society.

From 1992 - 1998, he studied at Fine Art Department, Faculty of Fine Art & Design, Bandung Institute of Technology, majoring in painting. He also took his formal education at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2001-2002). He participated in many Artist-in-Residence & Workshop programs.
