About Robert Hammerstiel

  • Biography

Robert Hammerstiel grew up in the Serbian area of Werschetz. In November 1944, the family was interned, and his youth in Hammerstiel was spent in various camps. To survive, he had to dig for tubers and bulbs at night. In 1947, the family managed to escape to Austria. He was a baker, worked in the steel plant in Ternitz and in a gray iron foundry. In the late 1960s he began to work up his traumatic childhood experiences in vivid pictures. Clearly he takes a stand against violence, terror, hatred and cruelty. Formerly the home of his grandparents, in Vrsac, now serves as Hammerstiel Museum. The National Museum of Vojvodina in Novi Sad has its own Robert Hammerstiel hall.
