Robert was born in Clinton, Massachusetts on May 9, 1928, the son of the late Ella Clara (Buckheim) Duffy and John Patrick Duffy. Robert served in the 58th Battalion of the United States Army after graduating from high school and was stationed in Kyoto, Japan. During his stay in Japan he attended the Art Institute of Okinawa.
