Rose Phipps Hilton studied at Beckenham Art School in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She secretly obtained a place at The Royal College of Art with a full scholarship, where she met artists like Peter Blake and Frank Auerbach. Hilton graduated in 1957 with a first-class degree and prizes in painting and life drawing. She married artist Roger Hilton and was influenced by Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard. The couple were friends with artists such as Peter Lanyon, Terry Frost, Patrick Herron, and Bryan Wynter.
