    Sally Philipsen, Copenhagen, 1879-1936, Danish-born painter who graduated from the Technical Society School with Holger Grønvold and in January 1896 entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied with Frants Henningsen and Otto Bache.

    She received the Academy Scholarship 1904, Kaufmanns Legat 1906, Nathans Legat 1932 and Benny Claudi-Pedersens Legat 1936. She was on the Board of the Danish Association of Painters.

    Sally Philipsen began as a portrait painter and in her early portraits shows inspiration from Rembrandt, both in composition and coloring. Philipsen's visit to Paris in 1910 introduced her to Impressionism, which left its mark on her art.
