    Sam Tonkiss biographical photo
    Sam Tonkiss was a fine, sensitive portrait sculptor, who did not start working in clay until his fiftieth birthday. As well as sculpting Lowry, Tonkiss also sculpted the Duke of Edinburgh, Elgar, Barbirolli, Solti, Bertrand Russell, Kruschev and other notable people.

  • Biography from Halls Fine Art Auctioneers

    Samuel Tonkiss was born in Shropshire and moved to West Yorkshire where he worked as a journalist in the early 1960s.  He began to sculpt a series of portrait busts, some of which were cast in Limited Editions.  An earlier sculpture of Lowry circa 1971 is exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery.
