    Serge Mendjisky was born in 1929 in Paris. His father, Maurice Mendjisky, was a Polish painter who had moved to Paris in 1914. These early artists that were drawn to and settled in Paris, the hub of the art world, became known as the "School of Paris".

    After completing his studies at the School of Fine Arts of Paris (Ecole des Beaux Arts), he moved to Nice in 1949. He was particularly drawn to the work of the French Impressionists and the Pointillists, notably Edouard Manet (1832-1883) and Georges Seurat (1859-1891). His father introduced him to Pablo Picasso, who encouraged his creativity.

    In his 30s, Mendjisky's work became also influenced by Van Gogh (1853-1890) and Cézanne (1839-1906). He exhibited extensively ...
