In 1903 he studied in Japan and took part in the activities of the Tongmenghui resistance movement founded by Sun Yat-sen in 1905. After his return to China, he remained active in revolutionary movements and was a member of the advisory presidential committee after the founding of the Republic of China. After the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, Zhang created several anti-Japanese paintings with strong nationalist themes. In 1903 he studied in Japan and took part in the activities of the Tongmenghui resistance movement founded by Sun Yat-sen in 1905. After his return to China, he remained active in revolutionary movements and was a member of the advisory presidential committee after the founding of the Republic of China. After the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, Zhang created several anti-Japanese paintings with strong nationalist themes. He also helped to raise funds for the Chinese army by selling his paintings in Europe and the United States. He died in Chongqing after returning from a fundraising trip.
