About Sidney Yates Johnson

  • Biography

Sidney Yates Johnson was an English artist who was born in London and later moved to Canterbury, eventually settling in Sheerness, Kent. Though the exact dates of the artist's life remain unknown, his exhibition period stemmed from 1880-1926.

Johnson was a painter of landscapes, animal scenes, seascapes, and river/lake scenes. He painted a large proportion of his seascapes and shore scenes to depict well-known locations throughout Yorkshire and Kent, and his landscape views portrayed celebrated views across the British Isles.

The majority of his works are signed with his trademark incised "sgraffito" technique, in which he scratches his name (and occasionally only "Johnson") into the wet paint of his canvases.
