About Silas Aittauq

  • Biography

    Silas lived on the land as a hunter and trapper before settling in Baker Lake where he started to carve in 1960. At that time, he used tools such as an axe, file and sandpaper to create his sculptures. He most enjoys working with stone and often carves abstracted compositional forms of animals and people.

    Silas, who died in 2013, was married to Baker Lake artist Peggy Qablunaaq Aittauq, daughter of the late Jessie Oonark.
