    John Longstaff was an Australian artist born in 1861. He won the National Gallery of Victoria's inaugural travelling scholarship in 1887 and traveled to Paris with his wife to study art. Longstaff returned to Melbourne in 1895, and became a leading portraitist, winning the Archibald Prize five times between 1925 and 1935.

    Longstaff is known for his delicate handling of subjects and his influence from his European travels. He died in 1941 in Australia.
