    Stanislaw Chlebowski (1835 - 1884) was a Polish painter with Russian and Turkish connections; student of the Fine Art Academy of Petersburg; awarded gold and silver medals and honored with the title of „first class genuine painter” during his studies.

    In 1862 he left for Munich and then to Paris to become a pupil of Jean Léon Gérôme. From Paris he traveled to Belgium, Italy and Spain. His first success was selling his „Joanna d’Arc in Amiens prison” to Napoleon, the III.

    In the late 1864 he left for Constantinopole invited by Abdul-Azis, the sultan to stay there for 12 years as a court painter with his atelier located at the sultan’s Dolma Bakche palace. During his time at the court he ...
