About Stephen Bone

  • Biography

    English and Scottish landscape painter, war artist, author, critic and broadcaster, Stephen Bone was educated at Bedales School and the Slade Art School with Henry Tonks. He was winner of the gold prize for wood engraving at the Paris Decorative Arts Exhibition 1926, and was a member of The New English Art Club. He was also art critic for The Manchester Guardian, broadcaster in the 'Brains Trust' radio series and in the 'Critics' on television.

    He generally exhibited small landscape panels, and venues included the NEAC and the Royal Academy. During World War II, he served first as a civilian camouflage officer and then was appointed an official British naval war artist in 1944.
