About Stephen Lack

  • Biography

An abstract painter of figures and other images of modern life in oil and acrylic, he creates work of bright colors with underlying "dark" or disturbing themes that expose aspects of American life. His paintings give the appearance of being done quickly, as thought the artist is whizzing by the subject in a speeding car.

He had his first exhibition in New York in 1978 and showed paintings of events sought by producers of news broadcasts such as traffic accidents and criminal activity. Four years later, he did an exhibition at Gracie Mansion in New York of canvases tacked directly to the wall, unstretched. Only later did he acquiesce to the conventional methods of stretching and framing his paintings.
