Francis Nicaise Tchiakpe, known as Tchif, was born in Benin in 1973. He is one of the most interesting artists working in Benin today. Like many of his fellow artists from Benin he is essentially self-taught. Tchif shares Kandinsky's views on abstract art: ''Shape is the outer expression of inner content''. Tchif works in a very physical way, his canvasses spread out on the floor of his studio creating works that have a map like quality where the earth is seen from above. Colour plays a central role in what are essentially abstract works despite the echoes of landscape and territory found within them.
