He began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnheim, but left just after having been there for a short time. Wolvecamp (also spelled Wolvekamp) went to Amsterdam in 1947, where various artists such as Corneille, Karel Appel and Constant became aware of him. Together they founded the Experimentele Groep in Holland, from which CoBrA evolved later. After having been to Paris and Amsterdam, Wolvecamp retreated to the rural province of Overijssel.
