    Sorella was the pseudonym of the Dutch painter Thérèse Ansingh (1883–1968), who began painting relatively late in life and was entirely self-taught. She only took up painting in 1932, shortly after her forty-ninth birthday, and from the outset chose to work under the name Sorella. The Italian word sorella means “(little) sister,” a reference she explained as reflecting the close bond between herself and her cousin Lizzy Ansingh (1875–1959), with whom she is said to have devised the pseudonym.

    It is also possible that the name subtly acknowledged her position in relation to the already well-established Lizzy, suggesting that she was, even artistically, “merely” the sister figure within the family’s artistic circle. Sorella’s oeuvre...
