    Thorolf Holmboe (1866 - 1935)

    Thorolf Holmboe was born the 10 May, 1866 in Vefsen, Helgeland, and from the age of six exhibited distinct talent for drawing. In 1886, somewhat before — it must be added in extenuation — that the old regime was completely swept away, he went to Berlin in order to pursue his studies under Hans Gude (see AskART).

    After a brief interval passed in Christiania, he turned toward France, studying for awhile in Paris with Leon Bonnat and Fernand Cormon (see both in AskART). A confirmed traveler, and a manifest cosmopolitan in his general attitude toward life and art, Holmboe is nevertheless fundamentally Norwegian in his artistic expression.
