    Velaphi (George) Mzimba, born in 1959 in Dube, Soweto, South Africa, was a self-taught artist known for his large-scale portraits and depictions of Zama Zama miners, township life, and still lifes. He began his artistic journey at the Mofolo Arts Centre and later studied under Bill Ainslie at the Art Foundation. Mzimba's debut solo exhibition was in 1981, showcasing his work that aimed to restore dignity and identity to people marginalized during apartheid. He continued to exhibit his art until his passing in 2021 due to complications from Covid-19.Information provided by the user.
