    Via Lewandowsky was born in 1963. After studying at the University of Fine Arts in his hometown Dresden, Via Lewandowsky moved to West Berlin shortly before The Turn in 1989. Scholarships and work trips led him to New York, Peking, Los Angeles and Rome.

    His complete oeuvre comprises a variety of artistic media and methods. During his studies, he was a member of the Autoperforationsartistik, who used subversive actions to break out of the standardized art scene of the GDR. The artist organized performances in the gallery Weißer Elefant in East Berlin together with the poet Durs Grünbein. He worked jointly with his wife Pina from 1989 to 1995.
