About Victor Joseph Segoffin

  • Biography

The sculptor Victor Ségoffin trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 1890s, studying under the 19th century master Ernest Barrias. Awarded the Prix de Rome in 1897 and the Légion d'honneur in 1921, Ségoffin's work was exemplary of the freedom and movement of the applied arts in the early 20th century.

With its flowing lines and vaguely mythological subject, Danse Sacrée, or Sacred Dance, is emblematic of both Segoffin's modern style as well as that of the Art Nouveau movement, with which he is closely associated. A larger version of this important sculpture, in marble, can be found in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
